Tennessee’s Sex Offender Registry began in 1995 as a result of the
enactment of federal laws that required states to create and maintain
individual sex offender registries. Currently, Tennessee registers
offenders who plead to certain enumerated offenses or equivalent
offenses from other jurisdictions, no matter the date of conviction,
plea, or expiration of sentence. Offenders who do not meet
Tennessee’s criteria, but are required to register in other states, are
also required to register under certain circumstances. All registered
offenders are found on TBI’s internet site, and the entries contain
information released pursuant to Tennessee Code Annotated, §40-39-
206. Sex offenders are registered by local law enforcement or the
Board of Probation/Parole; however, the Tennessee Bureau of
Investigation is responsible for the Registry website and for
maintaining the original registration documents.
